In Loving Memory: Elsa

ELSA was a unique mix with the coloring and protective instinct of a Shepherd but the diminutive size and short legs of a Corgi. And she had the most adorable ears! They stuck out sideways like a canine Yoda. Elsa was saved by a rescue organization from a kill shelter in Georgia and transported to the Hudson Valley. Arriving at the sanctuary in 2018, she needed support to adjust. There were signs of abuse from her past and her time at the shelter had clearly left her traumatized. But as the days went by, Elsa began to smile as she started to feel safe and welcome. She had a delightful habit of offering her paw for a shake. Over and over. She somehow believed that this was what she was supposed to do and missed no opportunity to place her paw in my hand. She was sweet and well mannered. While not a fan of Dolly’s noisy barking, she got along well with the little pups.

Elsa was a senior when she arrived and as the years rolled by, her health began to decline. She was diagnosed with diabetes in 2022 and sadly lost her sight shortly after. But she already knew her way around the house by heart and was so good about daily medication. And then in 2023, she developed kidney disease. Within a few months, it was clear that she was beginning to feel uncomfortable in her body. I kept her as comfortable as possible and when the time came, called the vet to assist her with a peaceful passing. With all her challenges in life, Elsa was a brave girl. I treasure the fact that she overcame her fearful past and put her trust in me.

Thank you Elsa for your trust and friendship.
May you run free across the heavens. ❤️🌈💫
